We have always loved books, even the scent of books, an attraction which is, not surprisingly, at the core of our decision to become a publisher. For many years, we have been involved in reading, selecting, designing, editing, and promoting books from Turkey’s most prominent publishing houses. And then one day, we came together as a team. For what purpose? To establish what will become the new powerhouse of publishing house in Turkey, to seek out new ways of doing ordinary things, and to pursue ideas that have never been attempted before. Not least of all, we want think and act on a global scale. Our passion lies in passing on our favorite reads to our future audiences, who, we believe, always deserve the best. Our goal is to help fresh voices in Turkey to flourish and to make available to Turkish readers the works of authors from various corners of the world, always with the underlying aim of publishing great books - books that are capable of capturing the spirit of the present and setting the agenda for the future. Emrah’s career in the publishing industry began in 1982, first with the ABC bookshop and then with the Hachette bookshop. For 31 years he worked for Oxford University Press–Turkey, starting out as area manager and eventually assuming the role of managing director. From 2003 to 2016, he shouldered additional responsibility as regional sales and marketing director, looking after more than 30 countries. Just as he decided to retire and spend more time enjoying his favorite hobbies, he was captivated by the hep kitap idea and suddenly found himself setting up a publishing company.
Kenan first stepped into publishing in 1977. As founder and managing director of the prominent Literatür publishing company, he became a key player in the development of the academic books market in Turkey through collaboration with renowned international publishers. He opened bookshops on various university campuses, published Turkish translations of major academic books, and pioneered the publishing of top-quality books in an arrangement that became known as co-publishing. For long years he has also supported the development of the Turkish publishing sector through his service as a member of the board of the Turkish Publishers Association.
In 2007, in cooperation with other major Turkish publishers, he contributed to the establishment of the Punto distribution company, which he managed until March 2016, when he accepted an invitation to join the hep kitap management team.
Deniz comes to hep kitap from a career at Doğan Kitap (2003-2016). Starting as an editor, she became the publishing director of the company, a position she held for seven years before deciding to move on. At Doğan Kitap, she enjoyed working with best-selling Turkish authors such as Elif Şafak, Zülfü Livaneli, and Hakan Günday, among others. Thanks to her efforts, numerous internationally renowned authors became household names in Turkey -Haruki Murakami, Umberto Eco, Jeanette Winterson, Margaret Atwood, Jo Nesbo, and Jean-Christophe Grangé, to name just a few. Her extensive knowledge and expertise make her an invaluable asset to the hep kitap management team.
For the past 19 years Işıl has been an editor and translator. Işıl worked the venerable publishing house of Doğan Kitap between 1999 and 2004. After working for Literatür Publishing for 4 years she joined the Doğan Kitap’s editorial team again in 2009 where she worked with authors like Ahmet Ümit, Elif Şafak, and Zülfü Livaneli whose titles rose to number one on the best-seller lists in Turkey. She also edited the Turkish copies of books by authors all around the world including Jean-Christophe Grangé, Maxime Chattam, Tess Gerritsen, Camilla Läckberg, Amélie Nothomb. She brings her wide range of publishing knowledge to hep kitap.
As early as 2003, Gürcan joined one of Turkey’s leading copyright agencies, the Nurcihan Kesim Literary Agency, as foreign rights assistant, a position that gave her the opportunity to interact with numerous international agencies and publishers such as Random House, Harper Collins, Simon & Schuster, Henry Holt, Curtis Brown, William Morris, Jane Rotrosen, and Rogers, Coleridge & White, along with many others represented by the Kesim agency. Moving on to Doğan Kitap, she continued her career as a rights and acquisitions specialist and then as rights and acquisitions supervisor. She brings a wealth of experience to her position with hep kitap.
Well known for her reviews of children’s books, Ebru also worked as an editor for Can Çocuk, a leading publisher of children’s books in Turkey. She has edited the works of numerous contemporary Turkish writers, including such best-selling authors as Sevim Ak. Ebru has also edited Turkish translations of books by Roald Dahl, Maurice Sendak, Erich Kaestner, and Paul Maar. Her passion for books - children’s literature in particular - along with her vast experience as an editor and more recently as an author, makes her a key member of the hep kitap team.
Yetkin is a multi-disciplinary designer living and working in Istanbul, and is currently a creative director at I-AM design agency. Yetkin was honoured with 2011 Turkish Industry and Business Association Logo Design Award and was selected as a jury member for the Exhibition of Graphic Products in 2004. His photographs were exhibited in such exhibitions as Edisyon, Istanbul (2010); ...için Sanat, Platform Garanti Contemporary Art Centre, Istanbul (2005); and IFA Galleries in Stuttgart and Berlin (2004). Selected design works include Istanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture identity design, the Kent typeface for Istanbul city identification system (2006), except for his innumerable book and exhibition catalogue designs. Yetkin has recently designed the comprehensive “Contemporary Art in Turkey 1986-2006” authored by Halil Altındere and Süreyyya Evren. It’s Yetkin to develop designs for hep kitap.
